Company insolvencies in the UK: how it works, sources and finding the right company

A company becomes insolvent when it can no longer pay its debts. In the UK, the formal steps of an insolvency — a winding-up petition, a resolution or order to wind the company up, entry into administration, the appointment of a liquidator and the closing meetings — are published in the official public record, The Gazette.

Using the filters

Search above by company name, town or company number. Use the region and status selectors to narrow the list — for example only new winding-up cases from the last 7 days. Each row links to a detail page with company data, dates and sources.

What do the statuses mean?

Winding-up petition (a creditor or party asks the court to wind the company up) · Winding-up / liquidation (a resolution or court order to wind up) · Administration (the company is placed under an administrator’s control) · Liquidator appointed (the liquidator who realises the assets) · Creditors’ decision (meetings or decision procedures) · Final meeting / closing (the process is concluded).

Frequently asked questions

Where does the data come from? +
Directly from The Gazette (thegazette.co.uk), the UK’s official public record, where insolvency notices are published every business day under the Open Government Licence. We present this open data in a searchable, filterable form.
How up to date is the list? +
The Gazette publishes on every business day. The list is updated daily; the date shows when each notice was published.
What is the difference between a petition and a winding-up? +
A winding-up petition is a request to the court to wind the company up — it is pending. A resolution or winding-up order means the company is actually being wound up and a liquidator is (or will be) appointed.
Is the company definitely closed? +
A company is only finally dissolved after the liquidation concludes and it is struck off the register. You can check the current status via the Companies House link on each company page.
